Here are some common HVAC terms defined:
- AFUE - An abbreviation standing for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. Your Pooler heating contractor can tell how much of your energy dollar exists as heat inside your home or building. A higher EFUE is always something to shoot for in efficiency.
- BTU - Stands for British Thermal Unit, which is the amount of heat that is required to increase the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

- Output BTUH - Is the cooling capacity or heat output that is measured in thousands of BTUs per hour. It is also sometimes referred to as MBTUH. This is a theoretical maximum capacity or output that the appliance COULD deliver to the building.
- Cooling Capacity - This is the determination of the air conditioning unit or heat pump equipment capacity to cool. One ton of cooling capacity is equivalent to 12,000 BUTs per hour of cooling capacity.
- EER - Standing for energy efficiency ratio, it is a measurement of the instant energy efficiency of cooling equipment. It is the steady-state rate of heat energy removal by the cooling system in BTUH divided by the steady-state rate of energy input the equipment consumes in Watts.
- SEER Ratings - This stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and measures the energy efficiency of air conditioning systems over the cooling season. This figure helps you to compare operating costs of the cooling system and lists the total cooling vs. total energy consumed.
- Watts - Is a measurement of the amount of electricity being used for consumption in a given appliance.
- Watt Hour - The Wh is a measurement of the amount of air conditioning energy used for an hour of time. For example, if you turn on a 100-watt light bulb for an hour, you are using 100 Wh of energy.
- RTU - This is an air conditioning and/or heating unit that is placed on the top of a roof, Roof Top Unit. These are common in commercial construction, but are also used in residential construction.
